Why Affordable Housing Doesn't Get Built - "Housing Watchdogs" Series

Affordable housing advocate, Ryan O'Connell stands in front of the Mayfair apartment project in El Cerrito, pointing at a large crane assembling Factory OS modules into a large apartment development near the BART station in the East Bay of California

We spend a lot of energy helping people build Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and other forms of small footprint housing, but ADUs are only one side of the housing shortage that we face in the United States.

This is a series where we’ll share some of the stories from our volunteer housing advocacy, which goes way beyond ADUs and delves into the world of political corruption, bureaucracy gone wrong, and much much more.

If you’re only here for ADU advice, you can skip this series. But if you want to see what makes us tick and the work that we’re doing beyond ADUs, this series is for you!

We catch politicians explaining their plans on camera, listing active cemeteries as potential housing sites, and other zany strategies to subvert affordable housing and housing of any kind in their neighborhoods.
